There was some swell last week so Alex was able to surf a few days. The first day he went solo while the kids and I stayed at the house doing laundry and hanging out. The second day we all went and anchored off shore. The kids and I hung in the boat while Alex surfed but Riley got sea sick from the rocking of the boat and ended up vomiting over the side of the boat the whole time, so we won't be doing that again. The third day was the best, in my opinion, because we figured out we could park the boat at Graham and Rachel's dock and hike over the island (a less than 10 minute hike) and hang on the beach. After playing at the beach for a few hours we headed into town for some lunch.
Sunday (July 3rd) we had lunch at Rana Azul. There was most of the usual crowd there and we met a few new people as well. The special of the day was flank steak with mushroom gravy with salad and croquettes. We shared one of these, which was delicious by the way, and shared a pizza. The couple that runs this restaurant, Joesph & Maria, are Austrian and their meals often have an Austrian flare.
Monday was July 4th and we were invited to a party at Cindy's house. It was a potluck style BBQ (We brought coleslaw). We rode over with our neighbors, Carl & Mary, in their boat. Cindy has a beautiful home which I have decided is my dream retirement home.
The kids had a blast fishing off the dock (they actually caught 2 fish) and exploring around. The grown-ups sat around and chatted, drank, ate and swam.
Tuesday (July 5th) we initially planned to just have a mellow day at home. The kids and I gave the dogs a bath and washed their dog beds after Gellie came back covered in mud. It took us awhile to catch her and when we finally did we tried her up with a rope to keep her from escaping. Indie was another story, that little girl saw what we were doing to Gellie and took off. She didn't come back for an hour!
It turned out to be a gorgeous day and by 10 o'clock we decided we couldn't just let it slip past us and hopped in the boat and headed to the Zapatilla Islands (about a 30 minute boat ride from our house).
We anchored the boat right off shore and swam in.
Now if this isn't paradise, I don't know what is!!
It was a perfect day at the Zapatillas. We had this island to ourselves. Around 2 o'clock we headed back towards home, stopping at Crawl Cay restaurant on the way back. We were too late for lunch but we had a drink and snorkeled right out front.
Yesterday (July 6th) we had some business to take care of in town so we spent most of the day there with a quick stop at the gas station beforehand.
This is from the gas station looking back at Bocas town.
After running a few errands we had lunch with Dave and Linda (our neighbors) at Buena Vista restaurant.
On the way back to the boat we stopped at the market for groceries.
And at the Reef (aka, the beer distributor) to refill our crates of Balboa.
After getting back home yesterday, Alex was cleaning the boat and noticed that the back hull had some water in it. After investigating further he realized that the plug was rusted out. We searched all over the house for a spare plug but had no luck. So today he hitched a ride back to town with the neighbors to get a new one. The kids and I stayed home to clean and do laundry.
What can I say... Just another week in paradise.
